Join us as we go south for an unforgettable autumn hike through the breathtaking Lahav Forest, nestled beside the elegant community of Lehavim, just 10 kilometres north of Beersheva. This hike offers a perfect blend of nature, history, and seasonal beauty in one of southern Israel’s most remarkable green oases.
Our hike begins near the Lahav Forest tower, a well-known landmark overlooking rolling hills and the vast Negev Desert. From there, we’ll wind our way through tranquil forest paths surrounded by ancient ruins, arid landscapes, and the soft colours of autumn. The Lahav Forest, planted by KKL-JNF beginning in 1952, now stretches across more than 30,000 dunams and serves as a lush refuge in a semi-desert climate that averages only 240 millimetres of rain per year. Despite these dry conditions, the forest thrives with a fascinating mix of Mediterranean and desert vegetation, including olive, pistachio, terebinth, and carob trees, as well as resilient plants like Jerusalem sage, whose silvery, fuzzy leaves protect it from the harsh sun.
During this time of year, the forest glades come alive with vibrant wildflowers, and if we’re lucky, we’ll spot the Sternbergia, also known as the “Autumn Crocus”—a stunning yellow flower that blooms briefly in the fall and transforms the landscape into a sea of gold. Along the trail, we’ll pass by archaeological remains of ancient villages, underground tunnels, and perhaps even glimpse migrating songbirds resting among the pistachio groves before continuing their long journey south. Lahav Forest lies along the northern edge of the desert migration corridor, making it a vital stopover for many species.
Our hike concludes near Lehavim, a serene, upscale community set on a group of hills overlooking the Negev. Its proximity to the Lahav Forest offers an ideal ending point, where we can take in panoramic desert views and enjoy the refreshing tranquillity of the region.
Over the last couple of seasons, we have had hikers whose boots have disintegrated with lack of use. Please check your boots are in good condition. before joining the hike.
