Why do humans have such a variety of visual problems when virtually all mammals have close to zero visual disabilities?  Why do so many people, especially children, have learning disabilities when what they see cannot be integrated into perception and understanding?

How have different cultures affected visual problems, and how have visual problems affected cultures?

Why do we have so much back and shoulder pain

All these questions will be approached, and some answered, in this lecture on human evolution.

Born in South Africa, Dr. Jonathan Shapiro moved to London with his family at age 8.  He first visited Israel in 1968 and made Aliya in 1981 with his wife Ruthie and two young children.

That year he opened his clinic in Pardes Hanna with little Hebrew but plenty of determination. In 1991 he was recruited to build and direct the Optometry Department at Hadassah Academic College, later teaching there for 23 years. Now semi-retired, his son runs the practice while he continues writing and lecturing, mainly on visual development and how the brain interprets visual information.
