 Rehovot - Najib Mahfouz

ESRA Rehovot invite all ESRA friends to a talk

Wednesday 4 November | POSTPONED

Najib Mahfouz and Arab Israel Peace with Ben Lynfield

online via zoom

Najib Mahfouz received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1988. He is known as the creator of the novel in the Arabic language. Less known is that he advocated peace with Israel in 1967. Ten years later he spearheaded intellectual support for Sadat's peace initiative and in subsequent years maintained close relations with Israeli academics whom he considered the best analysts of his works.

Ben Lynfield interviewed him three times in Cairo for the Jerusalem Post, and based on those interviews and Mahfouz’s writings he will discuss the laureate's openness to Israel (there were many factors at play - the wars with Israel, disillusionment with dictator Gamal Abdul Nasser, a humanist world view).

Ben Lynfield is the former Middle East affairs correspondent at the Jerusalem Post, was Jerusalem correspondent for the Independent and currently writes for Arab and Jewish publications. He lives in Jerusalem.
