Karmiel-Misgav talk with Coco Rotem

Thinking About Memoirs
an introductory talk by Coco Rotem

“Writing a memoir is a way to figure out who you were and how you got to be who you are.” A quote from Abigail Thomas from whom I borrowed the title of this talk.

We will look at the nature and structure of memoir, but mostly, we will talk about writing your own.
How do you begin? How do you decide what goes in and what doesn’t? Who do you want your readers to be? Should you let the family skeletons out of the closet?

I hope the talk will inspire you to peek down all the roads you have traveled so far, to remember what you find there, and to write. (P.S. If you think you can’t write, you are probably wrong.)

Coco, who was an editor for many years, became interested in memoir when she worked on a few memoirs and personal stories of others. After retiring a few years ago, she pursued this interest by reading, listening, and learning. But her most valuable experience by far is what she has learned through writing her own memoir (still in progress).

If there is enough interest, there is a possibility to continue with a workshop.
