Wave follows wave, and success follows success among the participants in ESRA'S Project of Excellence at the Ruppin Marine Science Institute. The end of year ceremony for the 18 Ethiopian teenagers was one to be remembered. Against the magical backdrop of the sea, the excitement of the participants, their parents, the teachers, administrators and ESRA members was tangible. The unique program, for 18 6th grade highly motivated Ethiopian immigrants included 20 meetings throughout the year. The students enjoyed the challenging academic classes, which opened a window to the sciences in general and ocean science in particular. Equally important objectives: strengthening their sense of worth, building a positive image and improving self-confidence of each student.
The participants report that the empowerment and success they experienced impacted on their lives in many other directions too. Having faith in their ability and understanding that the responsibility for their future is in their own hands has already led to considerable academic achievements. Their dream is to continue to enjoy personal success and use the tools they have received to make positive decisions about their lives as students, as citizens and in finding their paths for the future.
