We are happy to announce a special fundraising evening on Thursday 29th March at the Mishkan in Raanana. In his one man hit show  'It Sounds Better in Amharic' Yossi Vassa traces his long, arduous journey from his home village, mixing nostalgic memories of life in Ethiopia with hilarious perspectives on adjusting to modern-day Israel. New volunteers are always needed. This time there's a call for volunteer tutors for schools in South Tel Aviv - contact our ESRA Bat Yam Branch coordinator Susan O'Neill if you can help. 
Volunteer drivers are needed from Netanya to Bar Ilan University for a new project in Netanya - contact Nina Zuck.
Local volunteer distributors for the ESRA MAGAZINE are always welcome - contact Nanci at ESRA.

ESRA's Adult ADHD Group extends an open invitation to anyone wanting to learn about a System for Finances and Bill-Paying on Thursday, February 23rd.

ESRA's Branch in Tel Aviv is organising another fortnightly group with popular American ordained Rabbi Arthur Fischer. You know all those questions that pop up -- why do the Jews believe or do this or that?  All those things that seem to contradict each other or make no sense? What's the real scoop? About the commandments, mitzvot, women, the messiah...   Click here for more details.


Make a note in your diaries: H.E. Matthew Gould, British Ambassador to Israel will be speaking at a special fundraiser for ESRA on Tuesday 11 October  in Kfar Shmaryahu. Topic: 'From Iran to Israel: Travels and Travails of a Nice Jewish Boy in the British Foreign Service'.


We are looking for volunteers to help once every two months to pack and help deliver the magazine. If you are able to give a few hours, either delivering in your area, or coming to help at Gan Rashal, please contact Ingrid at Gan Rashal: 09-950 8371

As we are moving into a quiet period and many will be away on holiday we take this opportunity to update you on some of the events that are planned for the summer months. Several of our branches are having a summer break but others have some interesting and new activities.

Our Netanya Branch invites us to meet the author Barry Shaw  on Thursday 30 June. Barry will talk about critical issues affecting Israel’s position in the world and how to counteract disinformation propaganda!  On the same day ESRA Rehovot is holding its Annual General Meeting with a lecture on Al Jolson by ESRA Herzliya's own music maven Barbara Blum.



North Coast, the newest ESRA branch (from the Krayot to Rosh HaNikra) is holding its launch event on Tuesday 5 July. Pass the message on to all your acquaintances who live in that area.

Encouraged by the success of the ESRA Caesarea/Zichron brunches in popular local restaurants and cafes, the ladies of Kfar Saba and Hod Hasharon are starting a new Luncheon Club on Sunday 10th July. The next Caesarea/Zichron Ya’akov event will be at the Old Port of Caesarea in July - more details from Jane  077-550 3348.

We are also forming a Media Committee to cover all aspects of ESRA's interaction with the media and the public at large. If you have experience in the fields of PR, MarCom, social media networking etc please contact Jane Krivine.

aida.jpgOn 9th June, two busloads of ESRA enthusiasts will be off to see AIDA at Masada in one of the most exciting music events of the year. Within 48 hours of the announcement in our April Newsletter, the event was completely sold out. If you were disappointed, just look out for next year's announcement.  Our recent trips to the Bird Observatory and Botanical Gardens in Jerusalem, to Swan Lake in Caesarea and the visit to Beit Hatefutsot were also fully booked so our activities committee will be planning more trips like this for next season. Book now for our trip in July to the Knesset and the Supreme Court!

This project supplies needy families with monthly food packages and supports the food programme at a Netanya learning centre. ESRA has organised 3 trips - on 16th March we'll be travelling to the Beit Shean valley visiting several points of interest on the way; on the 22nd March we'll be heading to the South of Tel Aviv to visit the Michal Negrin Gallery and the Holon Design Centre; and on the 7th April to the Bird Observatory and Botanical Gardens in Jerusalem. Our midweek hiking group enjoyed a wonderful tiyul in February amidst the early sping flowers in the Adulam area near Beit Gubrin. One of the regular hikers took some wonderful photos and wrote about the hike which you can read by clicking on the link

forest-fire-pic.jpgWe are proud to announce that within two weeks of the Carmel Fire disaster, enough funds were raised by ESRA members to assist 30 families who have been affected by the fire. The monies are being distributed directly to the families with help from the Social Services Department of Hof Hacarmel.
We are continuing our efforts to help these families and continue our request to donate to our special Carmel Fire Emergency Fund
We thank you warmly on behalf of the families of Carmel.

ESRA has always encouraged English speakers in Israel to volunteer in the community around them - in this way both sides gain. ESRA has organised 2 opportunites to help discover how to use your talents and life experiences to volunteer. Two Interactive Workshops will be held in January and an Insight morning in February.


A new Social Group is being formed especially for Young Adults with Special Needs.
If you know someone who could benefit from such a group please check the link.

As a spin off from the marvellous Ahinoam Nini concert, ESRA is proud to be a part of three new projects opening in January 2011: a project of Ethnic Ethiopian Dance at the Matnas in Neot Shaked; a second computer room in Hefzibah, Netanya; a Bayit Cham (afternoon clubhouse) for teenage girls at risk in Herzliya.....  and that's just to start the New Year........As ever, your donations in support of our projects are always welcome.

October will a busy month for ESRA with the opening of three new important community projects: 'Neve ESRA', an afternoon clubhouse in Modi’in for at risk children, a new learning and therapy center for teenagers in Netanya and ESRA's third  'Students Build a Neighbourhood' project, this time in Herzliya. This month our new Branch in Modiin opens its new Second-hand Bookshop in the parking level of the Azrieli Mall. A training course for Befrienders starts on 5th October - if you would like to join please get in touch.

Next month, ESRA launches a new style Volunteer Evening on Wednesday 3rd November in Ra’anana to say ‘Thank You’ to all our volunteers and to honor ten outstanding volunteers for 2010.  The guest speaker is Saul Singer, co author of the international best-seller Israel - Start Up Nation - click on the link and reserve your tickets early.

Students Build a Neighborhood
ESRA  is aiming to provide scholarships for 26 students who will act as mentors and role models for over 80 children in 3 distressed neighbourhoods.
Each scholarship costs NIS10,000.
