Bar Ilan University Optometry Department has joined ESRA in a wonderful new program. The Department provides free eye tests, lenses and frames as part of an ongoing scheme to train 4th year students whilst helping society. This month 24 of our Ethiopian participants in the ESRA Netanya Sewing Centers were bussed to BIU, accompanied by Varda the sewing teacher and Ros Ben Ezra who volunteers in the centers. 5 doctors and their students gave these older men and women a very thorough eyetest and fitted all who needed for glasses. While waiting their turn, the groups were given a tour of the University and treated royally by the wonderful doctors, students and their guide who translated into Amharic for them. While sitting outside, some of the adults were excitedly approached by students who turned out to be their relations - a wonderfully exciting day.
They will now be seeing a better and brighter future through their new lenses!
BIU Optometry Department is prepared to take up to 8 patients at a time on a weekly basis. ESRA welcomes volunteers to spend a morning driving a group of patients to Bar Ilan (we need two cars each time). Please e-mail Nina at: nina@netvision.net.il.
