Social Centres for Special Needs

Nativ After School Center for Special Needs Children

Description of the Project :

A warm and caring afternoon program for children with severe emotional and behavioural problems.

How the Project Works :
Nativ center is open from 1 - 5pm , 5 days a week. There are 18 participants from the 1st to the 7th grade.  A hot lunch is provided.

The center is run with a strict routine and a point system for good behavior and attitude to peers and staff,  with rewards at the end of the week. The first hour is devoted to homework assisted by ESRA volunteers. Then there are varying activities including computers, sport, story telling, games, football and yoga, films and of course special activities for Hagim etc.

The centre is run by a fully qualified special education teacher. Small groups of no more than 6 are recommended for these children, plus an extra member on patrol to deal with unruly behaviour. Thus we employ 8 madrichim, plus a part time yoga teacher and football instructor.

About the Participants :
There are 18 children from Herzliya in the centre this  year.
If it weren't for the existence of this Center most would probably be on the streets until their parents come home and be candidates for violence, theft, drugs and abuse.  Most of the pupils come from low socio-economic backgrounds, but  many are very intelligent, unlike other special needs children.
The Partners :
Herzlia Municipality
Local Welfare Authorities
ESRA
Additional Information :

Nativ school is a special school run by the Ministry of Education for children with severe emotional and behavioural problems. These children have not been accepted into the regular school system.
Its success has been proved by the demand it has created.  It clearly fills a need in the community.
The Costs :
