Ethiopian Judaica

The Embroidery Project was started in Kfar Saba's Absorption Center in 1993. At that time, there was a group of new immigrant Ethiopian women who were finding it extremely difficult to acclimate to their new life in Israel. We reached them through their natural talent of embroidery. The project grew as their families purchased apartments throughout Israel and cottage industry centers were set up in the various cities.

Groups now meet in Kfar Saba, Netanya, Rehovot, Rosh Ha'ayin and Yavneh. The project is organized and run by volunteers who also market the goods in Israel and abroad.

Today, over sixty women use their talent, rich history and traditional patterns to embroider items of Judaica, Hamsot, bags, spectacle cases and other items. Each handmade item is a unique work of art in itself. The designs are used to create high quality items such as note and greetings cards, table mats, puzzles and more.

You can buy these items to give as a gift or to enjoy using them yourself. Many send gifts abroad which represent the Ethiopian community in particular, and Israel and Judaism as a whole.

Please join our efforts to enrich the lives of those less fortunate.
