About MRG
HOW THE MIRVIS RESEARCH GROUP OPERATES

The 90 members of MRG consist of:

30 Researchers -- those working intensively on their
       individual family trees
50 Associate Researchers -- interested family
members who provide information about tree
       branches near their own family
10 Observers -- members of family trees who wish to
follow passively the progress of the research work
and the messages which are posted to the MRG
       mailing list

The styles of the researchers vary.  Some concentrate on distant ancestors, trying to find out about the origins of their families by way of archives in eastern Europe and elsewhere.  Others concentrate on filling out the tree with more recent family members and their data.  Many contact older family members in order to learn about family history and members.  Some follow or are active in various mailing lists (e.g., JewishGen, LitvakSig, LatviaSIG, Lithuania-L), posting messages in their search for family members or others who are also researching their tree.  Some are active in Jewish genealogy conferences, trying to meet others who may be involved with their tree.

MRG members communicate with one another primarily via e-mail in their attempt to find links between their trees, to obtain additional information, or for other purposes.  At times the contacts are direct, at other times they occur via the MRG mailing list.

The function of the Mentor of MRG is to facilitate individual and Group research by whatever methods advance the objectives of the Group.  He frequently works with individual Group members, or with small groups of members, or tries to find new Group members.  Some functions are:

Helping to obtain information for individual trees
Prompting with leading questions about a family
Developing trees having no MRG Researcher
Obtaining records from eastern European archives
Suggesting possible tree links to MRG Researchers
Posting research messages to other mailing lists
Seeking new MRG members or outside research help
Managing & posting messages to the MRG mailing list
Preparing MRG trees in standard format
Distributing MRG trees to the Group
 Maintaining the MRG web site
That is -- being a facilitator!

The Mirvis trees are presented on this web site in two main groups:

Archival Trees -- trees extracted from various
       archival sources
MRG Members' Trees -- trees researched by MRG
       members of the trees

The Archival Trees are considered to be resources for further research by MRG members in the development of their MRG Family Trees, and for finding links between MRG Family Trees.

MRG members also develop other research aids which are used in the Group's One-Surname research.  Some of these aids are found on this web site.
