A course of 6 weekly meetings exploring Messianism in Judaism, from Kabbalah to Hassidut, and its connection with present day phenomena
Of interest to everyone wanting to understand modern day Hassidim, Messianism and their historical origins
Lecturer: Yudit Weil MA (University of London), lecturer in Jewish studies
Programme:
- The Jewish world today: an examination of the Lubavitch/Chabad and Braslaver Hassidim Are they Messianic movements?
- The concept of Messianism, its origins and evolution through history
- Kabbalah and the Messianic idea
- The dangers of Messianism, and examples from history of “false messiahs”
- The story of Shabbetai Zvi and Jacob Frank
- The Hassidic movement, Lubavitch/Chabad, and Messianism
Yudit was born in Jerusalem. After her IDF service she moved to London. She studied Jewish Studies at University College London and Jews College. She subsequently developed a career in teaching, as head of Jewish studies at the North London Collegiate School, and as a lecturer at adult education programs at the Spiro Institute, the London School of Jewish Studies and the London Jewish Museum. Her specialisation is Medieval Jewish history, focusing on the fascinating topic of the development of Kabbalah, the appearance of the Sabbatian Movement in the 17th century and the history of the Hassidic movement.
