Arts and Crafts in Petach Tikvah

The Petach Tikva Arts & Crafts group evolved in August 2015 under the guidance of Edna Chayen and has met monthly since ‎then.

The group also creates original and attractive articles for exhibition and sale at Charity Fairs.PT Arts group

Each meeting takes the form of either a talk or a workshop, and a wide range of subjects have been covered; making bead necklaces; ‎rag dolls and glove puppets; quilting and patchwork; history of knitting; drawing and painting; greeting cards ‎and designing and more. Following last month's workshop on felt, by popular request this month's topic is creating pictures from felt.‎

In ‎September 2016 the group joined the ESRA Netanya Arts & Crafts Fair and ‎exhibited for sale earrings, necklaces, paintings, cushions, wall hangings, book ends, fancy ‎boxes and greeting cards.‎

The group is run by Edna who usually does all the preparations for workshops and talking about the different subjects, using diagrams and pictures to illustrate her talks.

Edna is now 88 years old and has enjoyed trying her hand at all kinds of handicraft (as well as learning about the various crafts when she studied Anthropology for a Diploma at Cambridge University). Edna was at the Bar in England for 7 years and did research at the Home Office. She is co-author of "Persistent Criminals" (Hammond and Chayen, HMSO 1964).

She came on Aliyah with her biochemist husband Ralph in 1964 with their baby son. They settled in Herzliya town where their daughter was born. After 11 years they moved to Moshav Hadid looking after 2000 laying hens, and moved to Petach Tikvah in 1997.

She has also recently written 2 children's books; "A Green Fantasy" about the ecology of Noah's Ark and a funny book called "The Cherub" who could have been called "The Pickle".

Edna did a 6-month course at Shenkar "Patchwork, soft sculpture and painting on silk". She already had experience painting on silk for a designer for several years and has done some remarkable silk paintings. She now paints pictures with acrylic paint and makes bead necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

The meetings started with a core group of ten people in the part of Petach Tikvah where most of the English-Speaking immigrants live. More recently the meetings are held in Edna's flat which is less central. Our current members all co-operated to make articles for sale for the ESRA Netanya Fair and continue to develop new ideas.

The group invites new members to come along and experience something different! There is a charge of ‎‎NIS 25 for non-members and NIS 20 for members of ESRA.‎
