Project of the Month

These programs allow talented underprivileged teenagers to fulfill their potential by providing them with a challenging program of enrichment and leadership training at the Ruppin Institute of Marine Science. Talented 7th graders from all backgrounds of Israeli society in the lower socio-economic levels are chosen - programs run for 2 years.

    The New Branch of ESRA in Petach Tikvah held its first meeting on 26 February when a respectable turnout of 30 people came to hear all about the upcoming Israeli elections in a lively interactive presentation by Israel Seminars. Political positions may not have budged too much, but the explanation on the post-election process of building a coalition was an eye opener for some.

    Jordan Valley Branch reported a very successful meeting in February when over 30 people enjoyed the evening at the home of branch chair Peta Singer and husband Neville in Deganya Bet.

    After months of preparation ESRA Haifa Branch finally hosted an event on 22 February with a high ranking diplomat from the British Embassy in Tel Aviv. The event took place in our new 'home' at Central Carmel - a large air-conditioned Hall in the Hecht Cultural Centre.

    Our 12 ESRA volunteers spent a most enlightening afternoon on Kibbutz Maggal under the guidance of Shlomi, a member of the kibbutz and director of the Riding and Animal Therapy Center. We started at the olive oil shop where we were able to taste the 8 varieties of oil - each delicious in its own way! A wide selection of excellent oil was taken back to our Netanya kitchens!

    ESRA’s Project of Excellence at the Ruppin Marine Science Institute in Mikhmoret takes place every Thursday afternoon.  The project takes 36 motivated underprivileged teenagers to the Institute for enrichment in the sciences, ecology, marine biology and teamwork skills.

    Kamatov TV is an exciting new Internet Video Channel offered to English speakers in Israel, in conjunction with ESRA, ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections to the 20th Knesset. The name Kama Tov comes from the Arik Einstein song of the same name – “How wonderful that you came home!”

    The wonderful cooperation between the Netanya 'Hoops For Kids' Foundation and our 'Students Build a Community' project in Netanya resulted in an invitation for the kids from our programs to practise sessions of the 'Barak Netanya' Basketball Team.

    “Hearing about it is amazing – seeing it is truly inspiring”  With this in mind, ESRA has introduced ‘ESRA Ambassadors’ a brand new program to show the whole world the amazing work we are doing in helping disadvantaged individuals and disadvantaged communities.

    Our group of handicapped young adults recently went to watch a group of handicapped young men from the Spivak Center practicing their basketball skills.  Spivak is the Israel Sports Center for the Disabled (ISCD) - an Israeli institution operated by ILAN aimed at rehabilitation of the physically challenged.

    organ_donation.jpgLast week Prof. Jonathan Cohen, gave a presentation on Organ Donation in Israel for the ESRA Givatayim - Ramat Gan branch. Professor Cohen, originally from South Africa, is Medical Advisor to the National Transplant Center, National Coordinator of organ donations in Israel and responsible for courses on organ donation in universities and hospitals throughout Israel.
