Project of the Month

These programs allow talented underprivileged teenagers to fulfill their potential by providing them with a challenging program of enrichment and leadership training at the Ruppin Institute of Marine Science. Talented 7th graders from all backgrounds of Israeli society in the lower socio-economic levels are chosen - programs run for 2 years.

    Last Sunday ESRA Haifa committee members were deployed around the town doing various activities. Doreen was at Hof HaCarmel Station to meet our special guest speaker, Murray Greenfield, who came by train from Tel Aviv, whilst others were arranging the refreshment table in our hall at Bet Hecht at Central Carmel.

    nthcoast_bbq1.jpgYom Ha'atzmaut 2015 - the weather forecast predicted rain and sure enough at 8am it was pouring down. We optimistically continued making the salads whilst hoping and praying that it would stop and that the sun would shine by mid-day.

    Members from the Jordan Valley Branch joined Nahariya-North Coast Branch when they met together last week for a another interesting walk around some of the streets in Nahariya as part of the "On the Street where you Live" series.

    ESRA Haifa Branch planned its first picnic in the Carmel forest on Hol Hamo'ed Pesach. In spite of all the advance organising and planning, in the end everything had to be changed!

    Last Thursday ESRA Haifa again hosted a Games evening. It was held in our new home, the Bet Hecht Cultural Centre, at Central Carmel Haifa.

    Our 'Students Build a Community' projects were certainly busy on Good Deeds Day with both students and kids from the Hefzibah and Nordau neighbourhoods working together to decorate and renovate homes and public areas.

    Ingredients for a successful branch event: 1) A good idea = a walk along the wheelchair friendly Alexander River path; 2) a volunteer to worry about the logistics = Bish; 3) Attracting participants = publicity at our lecture morning + emails to all.

    This week our Neot Shaked Dance Group gave a demonstration and show for their parents and a few ESRA volunteers, held in the hall of the Matnas (community centre).

    Marlyn Butchins and her amazing collection of quilts came to talk to our ESRA Givatayim group, and what a treat it was!! Dazzling colors, intricate designs, variety of themes and motifs - all this and more in the quilts designed and executed by Marlyn.

    For over 60 years the Jordan river has suffered from neglect and severe pollution. Recently several organisations have combined efforts to improve the situation by the restoration of river banks, building a new a waste water treatment plant,  and releasing clean water from Lake Kinneret, with more projects in the planning stages.
