Project of the Month

These programs allow talented underprivileged teenagers to fulfill their potential by providing them with a challenging program of enrichment and leadership training at the Ruppin Institute of Marine Science. Talented 7th graders from all backgrounds of Israeli society in the lower socio-economic levels are chosen - programs run for 2 years.

    ESRA’s Bi-annual Volunteer Award Ceremony 2014 took place on 4 December in Raanana, opened by ESRA Chairperson Brenda Katten who welcomed the award recipients, their families and the guests and talked about the many ways individuals can express themselves through volunteering and so help others whilst enriching their own lives.

    Reports gathered from the 14 teams participating in ESRA’s first ever nationwide quiz indicate that this will become an annual event. As well as providing a fun evening for branches all over the country, the evening raised over NIS 10,000 for ESRA’s Bayit Cham projects.

    Despite a thunder storm and very heavy rain, over twenty people turned up for Haifa Branch's Games Evening on a Sunday evening in November. Scrabble, Rumikub, Woggle and other games were played followed by very adequate and tasty cakes, biscuits and savouries.

    On a bright, sunshiny morning in November, members from ESRA RAMAT AVIV embarked on an amazing and most memorable day visiting Kibbutz Beth-El and exploring the Tishbi Winery in Zichron Yaakov.

    ESRA Herzliya is very happy to report on an extremely successful and interesting talk, given in October by the Right Honourable Lady Hazel Cosgrove, CBE. It was hosted in a private home in Herzliya Pituach,being part of the series currently being presented locally called ’Getting to Know your Neighbour’.

    On a lovely sunny day at the end of October, a bus-full of keen ESRA travellers set off down south .. destination … the 'Salad Trail' on Moshav Talmei Yosef, 7km from the southern Gaza border. Our guide for the day was Peter Harris, an ex-South African who clearly loves his work, demonstrating his love of ecotourism, agronomy and desert life.

    A successful Befrienders group meeting was held in October at Beit Fisher in Raanana. These meetings are held twice a year and allow volunteer befrienders to get together and share their experiences. Out of the 34 befrienders in the Central area, 23 came along to the meeting from as far apart as Kfar Saba, Raanana, Tel Aviv, Herzliya, Petach Tikva and Netanya.

    The ESRA Five Towns branch has been holding brunches regularly for more than four years. The most recent, in October, was at the Tevalu cafe in Karkur.  People come along from all over the region, from Hadera to Zichron Ya'akov, and we select a different restaurant or cafe every time.

    Some 70 mainly UK Residents, many of whom have holiday homes in Israel, gathered together for a second year – in order to raise funds for ESRA’s “Give a Child a Future” Campaign.

    It was a hard summer here in Israel, especially for those living in the South of the country.  “Operation Protective Edge” took its painful toll. Daily life – never easy for those in Sderot, Ashkelon and the Eshkol area - became even more challenging with the increased rocket attacks from Gaza.
