The community of Kibbutz Yad Mordechai was founded in the 1930s by Hashomer Hatza'ir members from Poland initially at Kibbutz Mitzpe Yam near Netanya. They moved near Ashkelon in December 1943, naming the new settlement in honor of Mordechai Anilewicz who died fighting the Nazis as the commander of the Jewish Fighting Organization in the Warsaw Ghetto. During the 1948 War of Independence, the kibbutz was attacked by Egypt.
