Lecture and gallery visit - 2016/17 season

ART OF THE MIDDLE AGES

The derogatory term "middle ages" points to a time frame lasting between the ‎beginning of the fall of the Roman Empire, to the beginning of the Renaissance. ‎Medieval art in Europe covers a vast scope of time and place, over 1000 years of ‎art. It includes major art movements and periods, national and regional art, ‎genres, revivals, the artists crafts, and the artists themselves. It is not a period ‎in Art history, but rather many periods and different styles. ‎

In this lecture we will try to understand the significance of the new genres, the ‎innovation of the styles, the ways the Christian religion influenced both art and ‎thought – and get to know some of the major masterpieces produced throughout ‎this fascinating period.‎
