ESRA Rehovot Lecture with Ada Yonath
Nobel Laureate Ada Yonath will speak on "The Amazing Ribosome and its Tiny Enemies"
In 2009, Prof. Yonath received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her studies on the structure and function of the ribosome, becoming the first Israeli woman to win the Nobel Prize out of nine Israeli Nobel laureates, and the first woman from the Middle East to win a Nobel prize in the sciences. The award was given for unravelling the extraordinarily complex structure of the ribosomes, the molecular machines within the cell that manufacture all our proteins according to coded instructions.
Prof. Yonath was born in Jerusalem to Zionist Jews who immigrated to Palestine before the establishment of Israel and her father was a rabbi. She graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with a B.Sc in chemistry in 1962, and a M.Sc in biochemistry in 1964. In 1968, she earned a Ph.D. in X-Ray crystallography at the Weizmann Institute of Science. After spending some time as a post-doc at the Carnegie Mellon University and at MIT, she returned to Israel and established her own laboratory at the Weizmann Institute, the only one of this kind in Israel.
