ESRA Ramat Aviv 'Turkey in a Process of Change' with Eyal Offenbach

ESRA Ramat Aviv

invites you to a talk by

EYAL OFFENBACH, Lawyer and Historian of the Jewish Diaspora
“FROM ATATURK TO ERDOGAN – TURKEY IN A PROCESS OF CHANGE”
Ever since it was established in 1923, the Turkish Republic has been identified as a rare example of a Muslim country with truly secular branches of government, and from 1950 a democracy as well, at least in the representative meaning. Ever since 2002 the Turkish political sphere has been under the shadow of Erdogan and his party. They seem to contradict, at least at first glance, what many people thought about Turkey. How can the famous “Secularism Project”, the great heritage of Ataturk, live together with an Islamist party and prime minister.

The lecture will try to tell the story of the Turkish republic, from the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the present time.
