Talented 7th graders from all backgrounds of Israeli society in the lower socio-economic levels are chosen - programs run for 2 years.

ESRA Hike to the Northern Negev

makhtesh_katan.jpgThis is a wonderful scenic hike to the South of the Makhtesh Hakatan (the small crater) near ‎Dimona, where we will see many colourful rock formations and flowers. ‎

‎[A Makhtesh is a geological formation unique to Israel formed by gradual erosion forming a ‎basin surrounded by steep rocks walls and draining towards the east].‎

We begin by following the road built by the British in 1927, walking to the top of a beautiful ‎dry waterfall and then down Nahal Yemin, turning towards Nahal Hatira, which drains the ‎Makhtesh Hagadol.  We continue up to Ma’aleh Palmach, where there is a short ladder ‎climb named so because the Palmach fighters created a ladder out of rifles whilst searching ‎for a route to Eilat.  We continue the trail finishing near Ein Orke’am.‎

12-13 km.  Moderate hike, only suitable for good hikers

ESRA hikes are suitable for people in good health, who can hike on rough paths, sometimes scrambling over rocks and boulders.  We reserve the right to refuse participation on the hike to any person who does not come properly equipped or is not physically capable of making the distance.
Hikers should come properly prepared for each hike:  plenty of water (2 litres per person in normal weather, at least 3 litres per person if it’s hot), good walking boots or shoes, change of clothes/towel if swimming, hat, sunscreen and food for breakfast & lunch in a backpack.  Walking poles optional, but useful.
