LECTURE SERIES/WORKSHOPS 2008

ESRA, together with Raanana Moadon Hazahav, once again will be holding weekly lectures, following their most successful lecture series last year.

Lectures covered a variety of topics and included lecturers such as Harvey Bordowitz, Miryam Dagan Brenner, Dr. Bruce Maddy-Weitzman, Dr. Pamela Peled, Miri Kromolovsky, Dr. Ilana Rozinsky, Raphael Wego, Prof Gustav Meiseles, Avivit Brookstein, Joe Morgenstern, Roi Aloni.
New schedule of lectures to be announced soon.

Lectures will be held weekly on Monday mornings at Yad Lebanim, downstairs auditorium, Ahuza St., Raanana.

The new series will commence on 3rd November 2008
First lecture 9am - 10am
Coffee break 10am -10:30am
Second lecture 10:30-11:30am

Sun-Thurs 8:30-13:00 Sun & Wed 16:00 - 18:00.

Monthly screening of acclaimed documentary films at 19:30 (come early for refreshments)
at Yad Lebanim, Raanana.


June 2007 - 'Shadya' tells the story of an Israeli Muslim girl, a world Karate champion, who strives to succeed on her own terms, while remaining committed to her life in her community. Director/producer,
Danny Hakim led the discussion after the film.
November 2007 - 'West Bank Story' Ari Sandel's musical parody about hope and peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The film's musical director, composer Yuval Ron talked about the making of the film and played on the oud, a Middle-Eastern lute.
January 2008 Discussion on contemporary Israeli film with Udi Ben Saadya, writer, director & lecturer, - illustrated with clips from Souvenirs and Miss Entebbe.
March 2008 'Sisai' In this emotional and unforgettable documentary Ethiopian/Israeli director David Gavro, introduces us to his younger brother, Sisai, taking us on an extraordinary journey to Ethiopia to find the birth father whom Sisai has never known.
June 2008 'Eye Witness - 60 years' In the film, distinguished photographer David Rubinger, travels back in time to the places and people he photographed since the establishment of the State of Israel. Veteran producer and director, Micha Shagrir, led the discussion.
July 2008 - 'The Journey of Vaan Nguyen' a powerful documentary film about the Vietnamese "boat people". The story is a parable on identity and the tragedy of refugees.
Duki Dror
, director and producer will lead the discussion after the film

Tuesday 25th November 2008 - 'Waves of Freedom', screened at the 2008 Jerusalem Film Festival, is a documentary which tells the story of a group of American volunteers recruited by the Haganah to help bring shiploads of Jewish Holocaust survivors to the Jewish homeland. Archive footage is integrated with recent interviews with some of the volunteers who manned the ships. An outstanding film for all age groups to learn more about the founding of the State of Israel.
Film maker Alan Rosenthal will lead the discussion after the film

ESRA PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
ESRA Photography Group was established in April 2006 and holds monthly meetings each time on a different topic, and often with a guest expert.

Mini-Course on Basic Science Concepts, taught by Prof. Rose Johnstone.

Wednesday evenings: 12th, 19th and 26th November.
This three-session course will familiarize you with basic biology and chemistry and will take much of the mystery out of scientific matters. Chemical reactions and formulas will be kept to a minimum, using pictorial representations wherever possible, so that no prior knowledge of chemistry or biology is needed to understand the basics.

Rose, who has volunteered her time and expertise to develop and teach this course, has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, and is Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, Montreal. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Admission: For each session: NIS 35, NIS 30 for ESRA members.
For all three sessions (payable in advance) NIS 90, NIS 75 for ESRA members.
